The Undervein

“Where the city’s heart beats in the dark.”
A vast, shifting labyrinth beneath Ebonreach — part sewer, part forgotten city, part living organism. The Undervein is the circulatory system of something ancient buried beneath Ashenveil, its tunnels pulsing with the Black Current that flows like liquid shadow. It is a place of exile, secrecy, and forbidden knowledge, where the boundary between architecture and anatomy blurs.
Atmosphere
The air is damp and metallic, thick with the scent of mold, rust, and arcane residue. Bioluminescent fungi cast electric green light across slick stone walls, while amber lanterns flicker against breathing shadows. Mist hangs low over the Black Current, drifting like exhaled breath from the depths. Every sound echoes — footsteps, whispers, the distant groan of shifting stone.
Origin & Mythic History
The Undervein predates the modern city. It was carved by an ancient civilization that discovered the Black Current and attempted to harness it. Their machinery still hums in forgotten chambers, drawing power from the Obsidian Tide — a pool of concentrated arcane darkness. Over centuries, the tunnels expanded, collapsed, and reformed, becoming a living labyrinth tied to the entity beneath Ashenveil.
Supernatural Identity
The Undervein is alive.
Its tunnels shift subtly, as if breathing.
Its waterways pulse with arcane energy.
Its shadows move with intent.
Exiles, outcasts, and supernatural beings dwell here, forming uneasy alliances in the dark. Some claim the Undervein whispers to those who listen long enough — offering secrets, bargains, or warnings.
