The Night Ascendant
THE PROPHECY OF THE NIGHT ASCENDANT:
Lore of the Sun‑Swallowing and the Rise of the Chosen Shadow
I. Origin of the Prophecy:
The prophecy is older than Ebonreach, older than the Fae crossings, older even than the Thrannic civilization. Its earliest known form appears carved into the underside of the Blank Headstone in Ashenveil Cemetery — a place no mortal hand could have reached. The inscription is not written in any known language. It is etched into the stone from within, as if something beneath the earth pressed the words outward. The translation, pieced together by Mages, Fae, and Rootbound scholars, reads: “When the sun is swallowed, the Night Ascendant will rise. ”The sun has not shone over Ebonreach for centuries. But the prophecy does not refer to the past sun. It refers to the second swallowing — the one that has not yet happened.
II. What “The Sun Is Swallowed” Truly Means:
Most assume the prophecy refers to the literal disappearance of the sun. But the Fae, the Mages, and the Hollowborn interpret it differently.
1. The Fae Interpretation — The Dimming of Storylight. To the Fae, “the sun” symbolizes narrative illumination — the force that keeps stories coherent and worlds separate. When the sun is swallowed, the boundary between stories collapses. The Hall of Unwritten Tales begins to bleed. The Otherworld’s reflection becomes unstable. The Whispering Willow stirs.
2. The Mage Interpretation — The Collapse of the Veil’s Anchor Mages believe the “sun” is the Veil’s stabilizing core, a metaphysical anchor that keeps the realms from merging. When it is swallowed: The Veil thins to transparency. The Primordial Fragments resonate. The Convergence begins
3. The Hollow Interpretation — The Feast To the entity beneath Ashenveil, the “sun” is the last barrier between hunger and fulfillment. When it is swallowed, the Hollow is no longer contained. Its Voice becomes a roar.
4. The Werewolf Interpretation — The Eclipse of Instinct To the Ebonweald packs, the “sun” is the last restraint on the Deepwood Signal. When it is swallowed, the forest awakens fully.
III. The Night Ascendant — Identity and Myth:
The Night Ascendant is not a title. It is a role, a cosmic function, a being shaped by the Cracking Veil. Every faction has a different belief about who — or what — the Night Ascendant is.
1. The Vampires’ Belief:
The Night Ascendant is a perfected predator, a being who embodies the eternal night and commands the blood‑magic of all covens. Some whisper that Isolde Hemvara seeks this mantle. Others whisper she fears it.
2. The Fae Belief:
The Night Ascendant is a story‑shaper, someone who can rewrite the boundary between worlds. Queen Lirael believes the Ascendant is a being who can choose which story becomes real.
3. The Mages’ Belief:
The Night Ascendant is a Veil‑touched anomaly, a living conduit through which the realms can merge or separate. They believe the Ascendant will either heal the Veil…or shatter it.
4. The Hollow’s Belief:
The Night Ascendant is the one who opens the throat of the world, allowing the Hollow to rise. The Voice calls this being Beloved Threshold.
5. The Werewolves’ Belief:
The Night Ascendant is the bridge between instinct and destiny, the one who can hear the Deepwood Signal clearly.
6. The Truth:
The Night Ascendant is Elias Veylor —not because he was chosen, but because he was born at the intersection of every realm. He is: vampire-fae-mortal, Veil‑touched, Hollow‑marked, Otherworld‑reflected, Deepwood‑resonant. He is the only being who can survive the Convergence. He is the only being who can decide what rises from it.
IV. Signs of the Night Ascendant’s Rise:
The prophecy lists five omens, each tied to a realm.
1. The Ashen Omen:
The Ashwalkers rise in daylight patterns —even though daylight no longer exists.
2. The Frost Omen:
The aurora fractures into colors that do not belong to the mortal spectrum.
3. The Root Omen:
The Garden District’s roots form patterns resembling veins —a map of something sleeping beneath the city.
4. The Deepwood Omen:
The Ebonweald whispers names it should not know.
5. The Otherworld Omen:
Stillmere Pond reflects a figure with Elias’s face…but not his eyes.
V. The Final Verse — The Part No One Recites:
There is a second line to the prophecy, rarely spoken: “And when the Night Ascendant rises, the world shall kneel to the tale he chooses.” This is why every faction wants Elias. This is why every faction fears him. This is why the Hall of Unwritten Tales trembles when he enters. He is not destined to destroy the world. He is destined to choose it.
VI. Interpretations of the Choice:
The Night Ascendant has three possible paths:
1. The Path of Shadow — The Hollow’s Ascension:
The world becomes a single realm of eternal night. The dead rise. The living fade. The Hollow becomes whole.
2. The Path of Healing — The Veil’s Healing:
The realms separate forever. Ebonreach remains in darkness. The Primordial Fragments shatter. The world becomes stable….
3. The Path of Twilight — The Convergence:
The realms merge. Magic becomes universal. Death becomes negotiable. The world becomes something new. This is the path the Hall of Unwritten Tales hungers for. This is the path the Whispering Willow whispers about. This is the path Queen Lirael secretly hopes for. And this is the path Elias fears most.
